Must I apply for UIF in person?

Yes, you must apply in person and cannot send someone to the labour department on your behalf. Except for maternity claims, where you may send an authorised person with an official affidavit stating that you have given them permission to apply on your behalf.

I missed the signing date because I was sick – what can I do?

Get a doctor’s certificate and take it to the labour department that is handling your application.

It’s been 8 weeks and I haven’t received any payments – what can I do?

Call the Labour Centre – make sure you have your ID number ready.

Do I need to pay tax on my UIF payments?

No, UIF benefits are tax exempt.

I have resigned – can I claim UIF?

No, you cannot claim if you have resigned. You can only claim if you have been dismissed, retrenched or if the contract has expired.

When can I claim illness benefits?

If the illness perios is longer than 2 weeks.

What are maternity benefits?

Maternity benefits can be claimed if you are pregnant and take maternity leave. See our section on Maternity UIF for more details.

Can I claim UIF if my spouse passed away?

Yes you can, if the deceased was contributing UIF. If you are the minor child, you must be in school or at a tertiary education institue if older than 21. You cannot be working.

What happens if I get a job?

As soon as your new employer fills in a UI-19 form and you are registered on the system you will stop receiving UIF benefits.

My application has been unfairly rejected – what can I do?

You can appeal a decision of the Commissioner or a claims officer by sending the UI-12 form to your nearest department of labour office. The form must be accompanied with any documents/proof that reinforces your reason to appeal.

Can UIF help with insurance policy payments?

If you’re paying a monthly premium to an insurance policy, it is advisable to contact them to see if they are able to put you on a payment holiday until you have received UIF funds to cover any policy payments. Hi there, I left my job about 13 months ago to start my own business. I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and wondering if I can claim UIF ? I won’t be working and have gotten someone else to run the business. I have not drawn a salary from the business.

My contract ended in Feb 2017. I went in March to apply for my UIF. But there was a delay because before i claimed for maternity benefits but never payed out. I had to wait for the maternity claim to be cleared on their system in order for the labour department to process my uif. The problem now it took them 6 months to clear the maternity claim on their system and by that time i already found a job. What should i do in this matter?
